For the SCA fencer or youth combatant we have gorgets made of heavy latigo or harness leather. Our gorgets are made in two pieces, and fasten with velcro. This allows them to accomodate a greater range of sizes than if we made them in one piece. As you can see from the pictures of our oh-so-cheerful model, the front pieces overlap the back, so a glancing thrust from the front will not un-do the velcro. The front flap covers the tracheal notch, and the back flap covers the cervical vertebra. The collar is padded with shearling, which is also attached with velcro, so you can remove and launder it (cool water, air-dry, please), change to a different type of padding, or replace the padding as necessary.
We generally have black gorgets on hand, and often shades of brown. When you receive your gorget, it will be assembled "backwards", as shown in the picture of the golden-brown model. This keeps the dog hair that is endemic in our house out of the velcro...
Gorgets are $25.00. If you prefer buckles to velcro, we can make a buckled gorget for $30.00.
In March of 2007 we cornered a group of Midrealm fencing marshals (most, if not all of them from the Midlands area), and queried them on the legality of our gorgets, as they were designed before cut-and-thrust or sidsword fencing became the norm. The consensus was that the gorgets are legal, but they would really benefit from the addition of some metal. Our gorgets are fine as-is for youth (boffer) combat.
